Can AI agents understand startup websites?

We scanned the websites of 45 active Y Combinator startups from the 2025 and 2026 batches the way AI crawlers read them. The average AI Visibility Score is 54/100 (median 53). 44% score under 50, which means an AI assistant or agent would struggle to say what the company sells, who it is for, or how to become a customer. Only 11% score 80 or more.

Method

Each website is read without running JavaScript, starting at the homepage and following the pages that explain the business, the way most AI crawlers do. The score comes from 45 explicit checks across 8 dimensions; an AI model only extracts facts, which must quote the page word for word. Full details are in the methodology. Sites that opted out are excluded. Only aggregates and the top scorers are named.
